Making the most of your time in Cambridge

The Amgen Scholars Programme requires scholars to be in the laboratories working on their research projects throughout the week but we do encourage scholars to make the most of their free time and explore the local area.

Cambridge is a vibrant and exciting city, with a wide range of things to see and do.

Punting is a Cambridge tradition, if you are feeling brave then you can have a go yourself, or, for a more relaxing time, opt for a chauffeured punt with a guide who can tell you the history of the colleges and city as you move along the river.

There is a lot on offer for individuals interested in the arts with many free museums and galleries, a number of cinemas and theatres and in the summer months the Royal Shakespeare Company has a number of open air productions.

You can visit the historic Cambridge colleges and their gardens, or the Botanic Gardens, with its many rare plant species.

There are lots of shops and restaurants catering to all tastes - and of course, traditional English pubs!

If you want to explore further afield you can do so easily - for example, London is only an hour from Cambridge and there are direct trains running frequently.

Getting around

Most university departments are situated either in the city centre or on the Biomedical Campus. There is a local bus service that runs regular services between these locations

Of course, you also have the option of a more traditional means of transport in Cambridge, by hiring a bicycle from one of the many local cycle providers.

Amgen Scholars Programme

The University of Cambridge is delighted to continue to participate in the Amgen Scholars Programme and to welcome scholars from universities across Europe.

Amgen Scholars at the University of Cambridge will have the opportunity to work alongside our experienced faculty members, including some of the world's top academic scientists. They will gain hands-on laboratory experience, and actively contribute to the advancement of science. We hope that the experience of undertaking research in one of the world's foremost Universities will enthuse our Scholars about a career in scientific research.

We would like to acknowledge the support of the Amgen Foundation.
