What is the purpose of the Amgen Scholars Alumni Support Scheme? The Amgen Scholars Alumni Support Scheme has been set up to support the ongoing scientific development of Amgen Scholars Programme alumni. It specifically supports attendance at scientific meetings, conferences and workshops, where alumni are presenting results of their research.
What can the awards be used for? The award can be used to contribute towards the costs of attending a scientific meeting, conference or workshop, including travel, registration, accommodation and subsistence.
What is the value of each award? A maximum of £500 (or the equivalent) will be awarded for conferences within Europe, and £1000 (or the equivalent) for conferences outside of Europe.
I participated in the Amgen Scholars Programme in Europe, but am currently registered for a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. outside of Europe. Can I still apply? Yes, you can still apply for support. If you are successful and the meeting, conference or workshop you wish to attend takes place within the same continent as you are studying, you will receive a maximum of £500 (or the equivalent) towards costs; if the meeting, conference or workshop takes place outside the continent in which you are studying, you will receive a maximum of £1000 (or the equivalent) towards costs.
Do I need to have participated in the Amgen Scholars Programme in Europe to apply? Yes, only alumni of the Amgen Scholars Programme in Europe can apply to the Alumni Support Scheme through this website. There is a separate scheme for alumni of the Amgen Scholars Programme in the US, and those alumni will be contacted direct with details. If you have not participated in the Amgen Scholars Programme you are not eligible for support from either scheme.
What are the eligibility requirements? You must have participated in the Amgen Scholars Programme in Europe, and be registered for a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. by the closing date for applications.
I am currently registered for a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. but will have completed my degree by the time the awards are made. Can I still apply? You can still apply to the Scheme if you will present results of your Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. research at the conference or meeting in your application form.
How do I apply for support from the Scheme? Full details of how to apply can be found on the page applying for support.
Do I submit my application to the University where I participated in the Amgen Scholars Programme? All applications should be submitted to the European Coordinating Centre for the Amgen Scholars Programme. Staff from the University of Cambridge, the Institut Pasteur, Karolinska Institute, ETH Zurich and LMU-Munich will be consulted during the evaluation of applications.
Can I apply more than once? You can only make a single application each year. However, if you apply and are unsuccessful, you can apply again the next year, provided you are still registered for a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. Successful applicants cannot reapply.
What supporting documentation will I need to provide? In addition to the official application form, you will also need an academic referee to submit a letter of support, either electronically or by post. The template for the letter of support can be found under applying for support.
What is the closing date for applications? All applications for support must be received by the European Coordinating Centre by Wednesday 20th April 2016.
When will I find out if I have been successful? All applicants will be notified of the results by Thursday 12th May 2016.
The conference I wish to attend takes place in winter 2016 or spring 2017. Can I still make an application for support? You can still make an application for conferences later than summer 2016. If you are successful, the award may be conditional on you providing evidence of your registration/invitation to present closer to the time of the conference.
I don't know how much my costs for attending the conference or meeting will be. Does this matter? If you don't know how much it will cost you to attend the conference, please provide an estimate. Where the registration fees are unknown, please provide a figure based on the previous year's conference, or other similar event.
How will applications be evaluated? Evaluation criteria will include academic achievement to date and relevance of the meeting, conference or workshop to continued scientific development.
How will awards be made? Payment will be arranged directly with successful applicants, by either the European Coordinating Centre or the host Amgen Scholars Programme institution
Are there any requirements on award holders? All award holders will be required to write a short report for the Amgen Scholars Community website within two months of the meeting, conference or workshop attended.
Who do I contact if I have further questions or need more information? Please contact the European Coordinating Centre for the Amgen Scholars Programme.
